28V DC Operational Robustness for Military Vehicles

Operational Voltage Range Test

The MIL-STD-1275 D/E/F series, which defines 28V DC input power characteristics for equipment used in military vehicles, is applied to verify the compatibility of electrical equipment with vehicle power sources. The standard includes the Operational Voltage Range Test to evaluate equipment performance and robustness under voltage variations that may occur when the vehicle engine is running and when it is not running.

The Operational Voltage Range Test is performed by applying controlled voltage levels to the vehicle power source. The minimum and maximum voltage values required for the equipment to operate are identified, and voltages outside these limits are applied to assess the equipment response. This test is conducted to determine how the equipment behaves under overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

Purpose Objective

  • To evaluate robustness against voltage variations under engine-on and engine-off conditions.
  • To determine the minimum and maximum voltages required for reliable equipment operation.
  • To assess equipment response under overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

Test Scope Scope

  • Application of specified voltage levels to the vehicle power source.
  • Identification of minimum and maximum operating voltage limits and application of voltages outside these limits.
  • Measurement of equipment response under overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Voltage is increased starting from the minimum operating level, and equipment operation is monitored at each step.
  • Voltage is then increased up to the maximum operating level, with operation verified at each level as applicable to the procedure.
  • This process establishes whether the equipment can operate reliably within the defined voltage envelope.

Application Areas Use

  • Applied within certification activities as part of MIL-STD-1275 D/E/F compliance.
  • Improving the reliability and robustness of electronic equipment used in vehicle applications.
  • Supporting safe vehicle operation under demanding electrical conditions.
