ECE R10 – Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulation

ECE R10 is a regulation that defines type approval testing requirements for European automotive electronics. It covers RF immunity and emissions, transient immunity and emissions, as well as requirements related to electrical disturbances such as spikes and surges, harmonics, and vibration testing. The regulation also sets out specific recommendations and mandatory requirements for electric vehicles. It applies to motor vehicles in categories L, M, N and trailers in category O, including parts and separate technical units intended to be installed on these vehicles.

Purpose Objective

  • To protect drivers, passengers, and other road users from electromagnetic disturbances and related safety risks.
  • To ensure the safe and reliable operation of electrical/electronic systems within vehicles and between vehicles.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Category L, M, N vehicles and category O trailers, including parts and separate technical units intended for installation.
  • Radiated and conducted RF emissions/immunity, transient emissions/immunity, and emissions originating from power-line connections.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Mitigation of radiated and conducted disturbances to support driver, pedestrian, and overall road safety.
  • Prevention of malfunctions arising from in-vehicle network functionality and disturbances caused by aftermarket accessories.

Application Areas Use

  • Vehicle and component manufacturers operating under “E” type approval requirements for the European market.
  • EMC requirements for electric vehicles, REESS charging systems, and ESAs.

ECE R10 has replaced Directive 2004/104/EC and is recognised in more than 50 countries, including the European Union. By making electromagnetic compatibility mandatory for vehicles, the regulation establishes detailed rules for emissions and immunity requirements.
