What Is EN 62262 (IK Code)?

EN 62262 is an international standard that defines the degree of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts. These protection levels are expressed using the IK Code.

Scope

  • Defines impact resistance classes provided by enclosures for electrical equipment with rated voltages up to 72.5 kV.
  • Classifies the level of protection against external mechanical impacts using ratings from IK00 to IK11.
  • Each IK level is associated with a specified impact energy value (expressed in joules).

Purpose

  • To ensure that internal components are protected against harmful mechanical impacts by means of the equipment enclosure.
  • To enable manufacturers to clearly and transparently define the protection levels of their products.
  • To assist users in comparing durability levels when selecting products.

Tests

  • During the tests defined in the standard, impacts are applied to the enclosure using specified masses and drop heights.
  • After impact, the functionality and structural integrity of the equipment are evaluated.
  • Acceptance criterion: No damage shall occur that adversely affects the specified IP protection level of the equipment.
