Starting Voltage Robustness for Military Vehicles

Starting Operation Test

The MIL-STD-1275 D/E/F series defines electrical requirements for equipment used in military vehicles and platforms, including 28V DC input power characteristics. The Starting Operation Test specified in this standard evaluates the equipment’s robustness against rapid and transient voltage changes that occur during the vehicle start-up sequence.

With the Starting Operation Test, sudden and short-duration voltage variations that may occur when the vehicle is started are simulated. The test article is expected to remain free from damage and to continue operating without interruption or performance degradation under these start-up transients.

Purpose Objective

  • To evaluate robustness against rapid and transient voltage variations during the start-up sequence.
  • To verify that the test article does not incur damage due to start-up voltage transients.
  • To assess continuous operation without interruption or performance degradation.

Test Scope Scope

  • Simulation of rapid, short-duration voltage variations that may occur during vehicle start-up.
  • Provision of the appropriate voltage level using a 12V or 24V DC power source, as applicable to the platform.
  • Recording and evaluation of transient voltage behavior representative of vehicle electrical systems.

Technical Implementation Process

  • During the test, a 12V or 24V DC supply is used to provide the platform-appropriate voltage level.
  • The vehicle start-up condition is simulated and the resulting transient voltage changes are recorded.
  • Measured data are reviewed and the equipment’s susceptibility to start-up transients is analyzed.

Application Areas Use

  • Determining compliance of vehicles and onboard equipment with applicable military requirements.
  • Supporting long-term reliability and dependable operation of vehicle electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Verification of robustness against voltage transitions during the vehicle starting sequence.

At our STEST facility in Ankara, an organization accredited by TURKAK, we perform the Starting Operation Test in accordance with the MIL-STD-1275 standard—28 Volt DC Input Power Characteristics for Military Vehicles—for the D/E/F revisions, under the requirements of TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories).
