LDC601 Power Failure Test

Developed by the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense, the MIL-STD-704 Aircraft Electric Power Characteristics standard defines electrical power requirements for military aircraft and related equipment, including voltage, frequency, phase, ripple, and maximum current. The most recent revision of the standard is MIL-STD-704F_CHG-1, published in 2016. However, this standard is not limited to the U.S. military and its subcontractors; it is widely accepted worldwide for evaluating the compliance of military aircraft and power systems. In an aircraft electrical power system supplied by a MIL-STD-704-compliant source, the incoming power is converted to the voltage levels required for the operation of the equipment. To demonstrate compliance with MIL-STD-704, utilization equipment must be subjected to the applicable tests to assess the effects of specified power conditions and to verify conformity.

Objective Purpose

  • To verify that 28V DC utilization equipment is not damaged following power interruptions that may occur on an aircraft.
  • To confirm that the equipment does not create an unsafe condition after power interruptions.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Exposure of utilization equipment to power interruptions as specified in the relevant revisions of MIL-STD-704.
  • Assessment of whether the operation and performance defined in the utilization equipment performance specification for aircraft electrical conditions are maintained following power interruptions.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Throughout the test, the utilization equipment shall maintain the specified performance during power interruptions.
  • When power returns to normal limits, the utilization equipment shall automatically recover to the performance specified for normal aircraft electrical conditions.

Applications Use Cases

  • Utilization equipment evaluated under power interruption conditions in aircraft electrical power systems.
  • 28V DC utilization equipment.
