LDC501 Starting Voltage Transitions Test

Prepared by the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense, the MIL-STD-704 Aircraft Electric Power Characteristics standard defines electrical power requirements for military aircraft and associated equipment, including voltage, frequency, phase, ripple, and maximum current. In an aircraft power system supplied by a power source compliant with MIL-STD-704, the incoming power is converted to the voltage levels required for the operation of the onboard equipment. In order to demonstrate compliance with MIL-STD-704, utilization equipment shall be subjected to the relevant MIL-STD-704 tests to evaluate the effects of specified power conditions and to verify conformity.

Objective Purpose

  • To verify that 28V DC utilization equipment operates at the specified performance level when subjected to abnormal voltage transitions as defined in MIL-STD-704.
  • To ensure that the utilization equipment is not damaged during the test and does not create an unsafe condition.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Assessment of utilization equipment behavior when exposed to starting voltage transitions for the applicable revision(s) of MIL-STD-704.
  • Verification of operation and performance as specified in the utilization equipment performance specification document for aircraft electrical conditions during takeoff.

Technical Implementation Process

  • When starting voltage transitions are applied, the equipment is expected to operate and maintain performance as defined in the performance specification document.
  • Once power returns to normal limits, the utilization equipment shall automatically recover to the performance specified for normal aircraft electrical conditions.

Applications Use Cases

  • Aircraft power systems evaluated within the scope of the MIL-STD-704 Aircraft Electric Power Characteristics standard.
  • 28V DC utilization equipment.
