ISO 11451 Series Immunity Testing

ISO 11451-1 describes the general conditions, terminology, practical guidance, and the fundamental principles of the vehicle tests used within the ISO 11451 series to determine the immunity of passenger cars and commercial vehicles—regardless of the vehicle propulsion system (spark-ignition engine, diesel engine, or electric motor)—to electrical disturbances caused by narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy. The electromagnetic disturbances addressed are limited to continuous narrowband electromagnetic fields, and the ISO 11451 series permits a frequency range from 0.01 MHz to 18,000 MHz.

Purpose Objective

  • To determine the immunity of passenger cars and commercial vehicles to electrical disturbances caused by narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy.
  • To define the foundational principles and application framework for vehicle testing within the ISO 11451 series.

Test Scope Coverage

  • The electromagnetic disturbances addressed are limited to continuous narrowband electromagnetic fields.
  • The ISO 11451 series permits a frequency range from 0.01 MHz to 18,000 MHz for immunity testing.

Technical Implementation Process

  • ISO 11451-2: Defines a vehicle-level immunity test method for electrical disturbances originating from external radiation sources.
  • ISO 11451-3: Defines a test method for disturbances generated by on-board transmitters connected to an external antenna and portable transmitters with integrated antennas.
  • ISO 11451-4: Defines bulk current injection (BCI) test methods for assessing the immunity of electronic components.
  • ISO 11451-5: Describes the reverberation chamber method; the device is exposed to electromagnetic disturbances together with its wiring harness.

Application Areas Use

  • Immunity assessments against narrowband electromagnetic fields for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
  • Vehicle and electronic component immunity test methods independent of vehicle propulsion system.

The ISO 11451 standard series, titled “Road vehicles — Vehicle test methods for electrical disturbances from narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy,” comprises ISO 11451-1 (General principles and terminology), ISO 11451-2 (Off-vehicle radiation sources), ISO 11451-3 (Simulation of on-board transmitters), ISO 11451-4 (Bulk current injection — BCI), and ISO 11451-5 (Reverberation chamber).
