28V DC Surge Robustness for Military Vehicles

Injected Voltage Surges Test

The MIL-STD-1275 D/E/F series, which defines 28V DC input power characteristics for equipment used in military vehicles, is applied to verify compatibility with vehicle power sources. The standard includes the Injected Voltage Surges Test to assess equipment robustness against sudden voltage changes that may occur when the vehicle engine is running or not running.

The Injected Voltage Surges Test is performed by applying controlled voltage fluctuations to the vehicle power supply. These voltage variations typically arise during engine operation. During the test, the supply voltage is increased and decreased to predetermined levels. The duration and severity of the surges are adjusted to evaluate how the onboard electronic equipment responds under defined transient conditions.

Purpose Objective

  • To assess robustness against sudden voltage variations (surges) in the vehicle electrical system.
  • To evaluate equipment response behavior under defined surge conditions.
  • To support improved reliability of equipment used in military vehicle applications.

Test Scope Scope

  • Raising and lowering supply voltage to predefined levels to represent surge events.
  • Adjusting surge duration and severity to measure equipment response under controlled conditions.
  • Applying a waveform at a defined frequency and monitoring amplitude, frequency, and shape as specified.

Technical Implementation Process

  • A fluctuating voltage is applied to the vehicle power source at a specified frequency.
  • Amplitude, frequency, and waveform characteristics are defined and continuously monitored.
  • Throughout the test, equipment operation is observed and performance is evaluated for continuity and stability.

Application Areas Use

  • Verification of surge robustness for electronic equipment used in military vehicles.
  • Determination of whether equipment can continue operating within defined limits under surge conditions.
  • Supporting operational deployment of surge-resilient equipment in demanding environments.

At our STEST facility in Ankara, an organization accredited by TURKAK, we perform the Injected Voltage Surges Test in accordance with the MIL-STD-1275 standard—28 Volt DC Input Power Characteristics for Military Vehicles—for the D/E/F revisions, under the requirements of TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories).
