HERF TEST
HERF Test – Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Fuels
The HERF (Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Fuels) test is conducted to determine the effects of electromagnetic
radiation on fuel systems. It is critical for demonstrating compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements
for military equipment and for ensuring the safety of fuel systems in operational environments.
HERF testing is performed in accordance with international standards. The most widely referenced standards include
MIL-STD-461G (U.S. Department of Defense standard) and AECTP 250 (NATO standard).
Purpose Objective
- Determine the effects of electromagnetic radiation on fuel systems.
- Demonstrate conformity of military equipment with electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
- Evaluate critical hazards that may impact the safety of fuel systems.
Test Scope Scope
- Testing electromagnetic field sources across different frequencies and power levels.
- Evaluation of the electrical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics of fuel systems where relevant to susceptibility and safety.
- Identification of required mitigation measures to achieve EMC, and verification of their effectiveness.
Technical Implementation Process
- MIL-STD-461G defines test and evaluation methods to support EMC compliance for military equipment and is widely used in the design and verification of EMC-compliant systems.
- AECTP 250 defines electromagnetic compatibility requirements and the test procedures required to demonstrate compliance.
- During testing, electromagnetic fields are applied across specified frequency and power levels; the resulting effects on fuel systems are evaluated and necessary controls are implemented and verified.
Application Areas Use Cases
- Ensuring EMC performance of fuel systems and supporting overall safety in military platforms.
- Critical verification activities for EMC testing of military equipment.
- Risk reduction initiatives aimed at minimizing the potential impact of electromagnetic radiation on fuel systems.
