TS EN 1789:2020 In-Vehicle Heating and Cooling Tests

This standard is used to assess compliance of ambulances, emergency medical vehicles, and patient transport vehicles with respect to vehicle climate control, in line with the principles governing the establishment, operation, and inspection of ambulance services. When the ambient temperature is low, the air-conditioning system’s heating performance is evaluated; when the ambient temperature is high, its cooling performance is assessed.

Purpose Objective

  • To evaluate the suitability of climate control systems in ambulances, emergency medical vehicles, and patient transport vehicles.
  • To observe heating performance at low ambient temperature and cooling performance at high ambient temperature.

Test Scope Coverage

  • In-vehicle heating test performed with reference to TS EN 1789:2020, Clause 5.10.
  • In-vehicle cooling test performed with reference to TS EN 1789:2020, Clause 5.11.

Technical Implementation Process

  • For the heating test, temperature values from thermocouples located at the centre of the stretcher in the patient compartment are measured.
  • Following the test, visual, physical, and functional inspections are performed to verify heating system performance.
  • For the cooling test, thermocouple temperature values in the patient compartment are measured and post-test inspections confirm whether any cooling performance issues are present.

Application Areas Use

  • Assessment of climate control compliance for ambulances, emergency medical vehicles, and patient transport vehicles.
  • Performance observation using thermocouple measurements at the stretcher centre and relevant locations within the patient compartment.

Within the scope of TS EN 1789:2020, the in-vehicle heating test is conducted with reference to Clause 5.10 and the in-vehicle cooling test with reference to Clause 5.11. Thermocouple temperature values in the patient compartment are recorded, and the performance of the climate control system is evaluated through post-test visual, physical, and functional inspections.
