EN 13766 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Test Standard

EN 13766 is a test standard for assessing the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of earth-moving and construction machinery. The standard is designed to support safe and effective operation by ensuring machinery can perform reliably without being adversely affected by electromagnetic fields in its operating environment. Machinery within scope is expected to meet the characteristics defined in EN 6165:2012 and EN/TR 12603:2010.

Purpose Objective

  • To support safe and effective operation of earth-moving and construction machinery without adverse influence from electromagnetic fields.
  • To evaluate EMC performance and identify potential electromagnetic non-conformities.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Drilling and foundation equipment.
  • Equipment used for preparing, transporting, and compacting concrete, mortar, and processing reinforcement.
  • Road construction and maintenance machinery and equipment.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Assessment of broadband and narrowband electromagnetic interference phenomena.
  • Evaluation of electromagnetic field immunity, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and conducted transient currents.
  • Machinery may include an internal electrical power supply that can be DC, AC, or a combination of both.
  • Machinery designed to be supplied from the external mains and events caused by military applications are excluded from scope.
  • Electrical/electronic sub-assemblies (ESAs) and stand-alone ESAs are also subject to the standard.

Application Areas Use

  • Earth-moving and construction machinery.
  • Drilling, foundation, road construction/maintenance equipment, and concrete/mortar preparation–transport–compaction equipment.
Matter intended for installation: electrical/electronic sub-assemblies and stand-alone ESAs for machinery.

EN 13766 consists of EN 13766-1, which addresses general EMC requirements under typical electromagnetic environmental conditions, and EN 13766-2, which introduces additional EMC requirements for functional safety. This structure provides a framework for assessing machinery operation under electromagnetic disturbances and evaluating the electromagnetic compatibility of safety-related control systems.
