Risks Associated with Electromagnetic Radiation

EMRADHAZ – Electromagnetic Radiation Hazards Assessment Test

The EMRADHAZ (Electromagnetic Radiation Hazards) test is conducted to identify risks arising from electromagnetic radiation and to demonstrate compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. It is critical for ensuring that military equipment meets EMC expectations and for safeguarding personnel, equipment, and systems.

EMRADHAZ testing is performed in accordance with international standards. The most widely referenced standards include MIL-STD-464 (U.S. Department of Defense standard), AECTP 500 (NATO standard), and CISPR 16 (International Electrotechnical Commission standard).

Purpose Objective

  • Identify risks associated with electromagnetic radiation and ensure compliance with EMC requirements.
  • Demonstrate conformity of military equipment with electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
  • Minimize hazards to ensure the safety of personnel, equipment, and systems.

Test Scope Scope

  • Evaluation of electromagnetic field sources across different frequency ranges and power levels.
  • Assessment of EMC requirements under MIL-STD-464, AECTP 500, and CISPR 16 frameworks.
  • Execution of EMRADHAZ testing in alignment with MIL-STD-464 A/B/C revisions.

Technical Implementation Process

  • MIL-STD-464 defines electromagnetic compatibility requirements, outlines how EMC verification activities should be conducted, and specifies conditions necessary for EMRADHAZ assessment.
  • AECTP 500 establishes test procedures required to define and demonstrate compliance with EMC requirements.
  • CISPR 16 provides measurement methods and instrumentation requirements widely used for EMC-oriented design and testing.
  • During EMRADHAZ assessments, electromagnetic field sources are tested across varying frequencies and power levels; mitigation measures required for EMC are implemented and their effectiveness is verified.

Application Areas Use Cases

  • Supporting the safety of personnel, equipment, and systems by ensuring EMC performance of military assets.
  • Reducing operational risk by minimizing electromagnetic radiation hazards through EMC-compliant solutions.
  • Supporting environmental, EMI/EMC, and ATP testing needs to enhance product quality and reliability.

As STEST, a TURKAK-accredited organization located in Ankara, we perform EMRADHAZ (Electromagnetic Radiation Hazards) assessments in accordance with the MIL-STD-464 standard (revisions A/B/C), under the requirements of TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories).
