RTCA DO-160 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Test / Part 25.0

The RTCA DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment standard is designed to simulate the environmental conditions that electrical and electronic equipment used in the aviation industry may encounter during flight operations. The Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Test is defined in Part 25 of this standard and is performed to evaluate the potential effects that may occur when static electricity is suddenly discharged into a device.

Objective Purpose

  • To determine the response of electronic equipment to ESD events resulting from the sudden discharge of static electricity.
  • To support compliance assessment aimed at improving the reliability of airborne equipment.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Application of ESD pulses to various sections, interfaces, and cabling of the equipment.
  • Evaluation of the equipment’s susceptibility to disturbance and potential damage under ESD exposure.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Tests are performed by applying high-voltage pulses using a purpose-built Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) generator.
  • By applying ESD pulses at different points, the equipment response and susceptibility behavior are characterized.

Applications Use Cases

  • Electrical and electronic equipment used in aircraft and other airborne platforms.
  • Systems and interfaces within the aviation industry that may be exposed to ESD conditions.

At our STEST facility in Ankara, accredited by TURKAK, we perform the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Test in accordance with TS EN ISO/IEC 17025, within the scope of the RTCA DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment standard (versions E/F/G).
